They knew their Scripture. They were expecting a king to come and rule — and they were right. They just didn't know which visit this was. Jesus will come to overthrow every enemy and rule with justice. That day is coming. But this visit had a different agenda — something deeper, more necessary than political liberation. Before he could come as conquering king, he had to come as atoning sacrifice. The crowd was ready for the second coming. They weren't ready for the first.
